"LEARNING THROUGH PLAY"
EXPANDING HORIZONS PRE-SCHOOL
School Philosophy

We believe that as young children grow they intrinsically seek to understand their world and their first experiences form the foundation for later learning. We think learning takes place naturally when children are allowed the freedom to explore in stimulating, fun surroundings. And, with the guidance of supportive adults children can gain the necessary opportunities, confidence and skills to widen the realm of their positive experiences.

We believe a child's cognitive, physical, social, emotional and aesthetic development are all equally important and interrelated, one aspect of a child's growth affects the others.
We provide a balanced curriculum in which a child has the opportunity to develop skills and concepts in every area of
development. The programming focuses on fostering high self-esteem, independence, problem solving, creativity,
leadership, sharing, and large and small motor skills. The curriculum also encompasses the subject areas of science,
social studies, language arts, music, art, gross and fine motor skills, math and letter recognition through the play centres and circle times.

We believe children are individuals and so they each have their own natural capacities and approaches to experiences. We think every child has his/her own way and rate of growing and learning and that growth takes place in orderly stages.
Expanding Horizon's program facilitates optimum learning and growth experiences through concrete, "hands on" experiences and the freedom to explore and experiment. The children also have long stretches of time to chose their own activities, the length of time spent in the activities and short periods of time in large group situations everyday. In addition, we provide a range of varied, positive experiences appropriate not only to the age and stage of the children but planned and set up to meet the abilities, needs and interests of the children as individuals and as a group. We supply a range, large number and variety of play materials for different activities and within each activity itself. The play materials are changed as the children's growth and interests change.

We believe children have a right to respect, security, safety and acceptance and opportunities to build on their self-esteem and self-respect. This program values parents as partners in their child's education, reflects cultural sensitivity and the understanding that the centre should always be a safe, comfortable, fun and stress-free place for children where adults provide support and protection. We will consult and cooperate with parents, provide continuity between home and centre, a safe physical environment, appropriate curriculum and show children respect, warmth, trustful confidence and unconditional positive regard in adult-child interactions.
